Life in the Fail Lane: Tumblr Haters Gonna Hate

I can't believe it's come to this. Come on guys... really?

Yes, it's more "Let's Bash P-R on Tumblr" time! (I hope this isn't becoming a new series here...)

Once again, some person took something of mine out of context. And rather than talking to me about it, they decided to go hide away on Tumblr like a five year-old pansy.

Are you too afraid to actually talk to me like an adult? Is that why you hide on Tumblr? Or is it because you know I don't use it and think I won't notice? Maybe it's both?

They posted one of my pro-life pictures... prolifehypocrisy.tumblr.com/po…

Now, to be fair, I probably did get some things wrong and/or took them out of context... but I need to remind you that that image was uploaded a year ago and I was using pretty dated sources at the time.

But my question is... why was it such a big deal?

If I'm wrong on something, who cares? I'm a person and I'm not perfect. Mistakes happen.

But then it got better when someone left me a "delightful" comment.

I saw one your pieces rolling around tumblr, getting mocked due it's factual inaccuracies, blatant propaganda, and biological essentialism.

"Many women who have had abortions kill themselves."

Do you have a citation to a recent psychological journal for that? I have a degree in clinical psychology, and I've never heard such an outrageous claim. The latest literature, implies that women tend to be relived after an abortion, because they don't have the stress of an unwanted pregnancy. If there is a study that supports it, don't you suppose that it's simply a correlation, it doesn't mean that abortion causes suicide it means the two happen together frequently. It would be like saying that eating bread causes cancer, because people who get cancer eat bread. Just because two things happen at the same time doesn't mean that one causes the other. In fact, if there is a correlation between suicide and abortion, it's mostly due to mediating factors like the shame that society places on a woman who exercises her right to bodily autonomy, or perhaps because the protestors outside don't understand her plight and treat her like a child, who doesn't know what's best for herself.

I suggest you actually look at the studies independently with a critical eye, rather than rely on a link with outdated sources, and straight out lies.

BTW: disabling comments, makes it look like one can't handle a mature debate, or that you can't handle scientific facts because they disproves one's narrow minded view of the world.

Oh, where to start?

First what is "due it's factual inaccuracies?" The proper term - my grammatically challenged one - is "due to its factual inaccuracies." And women tend to be "relived?" What the heck are you blabbering about here? Or did you mean "relieved?" Because that's an entirely different word. Guess you couldn't be bothered to even spell that correctly... which only proves to me how dumbed down education has become. I don't know what schools you went to, but I'd demand a refund. Also, who cares if I disabled the comments? I'm not obliged to talk to anyone. What? Were you mad because you couldn't start something on the picture itself? Sorry to spoil your day kiddo.

Oh, but then she wrote this journal about me! fav.me/d5bp3g1 BAWLEETED!!

People here need to learn to science. You can have an opinion, but when you're opinion is supported by faulty science, you're a fool and you only make yourself look like an ass. Learn some basic critical thinking skills, it's not that difficult.

"People here need to learn to science?" I think you might need to learn how to properly speak English, because that sentence makes no sense. And it's "your opinion," not "you're opinion." "You're" is a combination of "you" and "are."

I honestly think this person's just some little kid pretending to be a "college" educated adult. If not, then they need to stay in school for a long, long time.

And I think all those people who cowardly hide on Tumblr should man up and try to talk to me. Because I'll talk to most anyone, so long as they don't act like a douche.

EDIT: So, apparently, it's a mortal sin to have a mild snark over bad grammar. Who knew?

To all those wondering why I didn't "stick to the topic", I did. The topic of this journal was about Tumblr. Yes, I was having a mild laugh over the person who brought it to my attention, because she typed like a ten year-old at best, but that was it for that. The topic here was about Tumblr.

And, yes, I know that it was rushed, but I had to go to work tonight and I wanted to get some of my thoughts out. I was planning on writing more later, but so many people assumed this was the finished product.

Okay... on to more of my thoughts about Tumblr.

I'm not a fan of Tumblr for several reasons...

Number One - It's overrated. Let's be honest here... it's essentially the new Photobucket. Not much of a difference there...
Number Two - There are too many bandwagons over there. I'm not against some bandwagons, but that's all Tumblr is. Everybody jumps on this or that without knowing the context behind it like a bunch of sheep.
Number Three - Too many weird people frequent Tumblr... TOO MANY!! I will leave it at that.

Now to get to the "relevant" year-old picture, since many people were offended that I didn't bother to talk about that...

"Many women who have had abortions kill themselves."

This comment was slightly inaccurate due to me forgetting a key word here. That word is "forced."

Many women who have had forced abortions have killed themselves. Women who are forced to have abortions have a tendency to get severe depression and/or PTSD from it.

Anyhoo...

Until next time...

"I'm not a fan of tumblr for several reasons..."

I dunno, you might like one page I found called "dumb deviantART comments" which includes stuff like bad grammar.

One of the best I saw was:
"You're stupid."
"... My stupid what?"
Use proper grammar!

:XD:

I've seen that page.

"You're stupid" is proper... was that why it was on DD?

No, the person who posted the comment had a classic swap of "you're" and "your", like how people tend to type "your stupid".

The person just had one of those moments where they try to sound smart, but come off looking even dumber. "You're stupid. My stupid what? Use proper grammar!"

Ahh, Tumblr. An amusing place to read ask-characters, but can be annoying as hell if you said or asked the wrong thing. Personally I'd prefer Deviantart or Spacebattles.com.

Ah the No Comments excuse. It's kinda funny how people who say that people disabling comments means cowardice when they also disable comments. But personally, disabling comments can also have good reasons like you said above.

Then again, abortion is on the grey and gray morality scale. Is it good? Is it bad? Does it provide happiness or sadness? I think a better thing to do would be to avoid having to pick that choice no the first place. Then again that wouldn't solve the whole problem.

Glad to see you're still alive with this Life in the Fail Lane~

I didn't start out disabling the comments either. I tried to give people a chance to be polite. But so many people started acting rude, so I disabled the comments.

I have a tumblr, and yeah I agree with you. Too many bandwagons and a looot of ... "interesting" people on there, indeed. I just ignore a lot of the tripe on there.
And don't worry about the tumblr post. Not many have noticed it, really. ;) It's getting little to no attention. :D

I agree with you and your stance on grammar. It's very hard to make an intelligent point if you don't know how to use grammar properly (unless you're not using your first language, but that's a bit different and I'm positive that this girl's first language is English) or even try to use it properly. It's the language that we've grown up with, simple rules that everyone learned in elementary and suddenly forgets the moment they walk outside of school, where their writing (or blogging) isn't for a grade. Just because it's not graded doesn't mean you can ignore it.
And now I'm ranting. Anyway.
The word "forced" would have changed the meaning completely and it's almost sad that that one missing word changed the effect so much, not to diss you in anyway, of course. The person who posted about your picture became offended way too easily and just jumped into trying degrade your picture and your views to try to prove her point and her beliefs. In the end, this is just one more thing blown completely out of context, people not looking at the facts, and not being open-minded about everyone's views.

Exactly. I goofed by forgetting that key word, but it was blown way out of proportion. I was making a point about the women who were forced to have them done and how much pain they feel. That was the whole meaning behind the image.

I'm aware sometimes cases vary, but many girls get forced into getting them by their boyfriends or families. I wanted to address that with the picture.

Didn't you know? The Internet was invented so that pathetic adults can feel validated in infantile behaviour.

Anyway, once again you hit the nail right on the head. Keep doing what you do.

it's not like you were forcing your opinion on people or anything, your work is just expressing your stance on something, which is what all artists do at some point in their life. A lot of artists were criticised for having ideas which were different, so I think that if your work gets people talking and starts raising awareness then it's definitely successful!

there are some really good tumblr blogs out there for graphic design and stuff and a lot of illustrators are using tumblr to post their sketches and stuff which is a cool thing about tumblr LOL it's not for everyone though, which is perfectly fine

There are nice things on Tumblr, but it's hard to filter the good.

And it's not like I just uploaded this yesterday. That image was a year-old by now. Of course the sources were a bit outdated.

I like how many of the comments here are from people who clearly didn't bother to read the whole thing or pay attention to the context. Someone took an old deviation you did relying heavily on current data and theories of the time, then, taking a page directly from modern politics, responded as if you just said it yesterday.

Someone then comes along and tells us all how smart they are and about their degrees. You succinctly point out the hypocrisy of her "I'm so much smarter than everyone else, now here are a bunch of everyday grammatical errors." There's no hypocrisy on your part, because you weren't the one touting your intelligence over others. She was the one ignoring the context of the original deviation, then spouting credentials and calling others unintelligent. She doesn't get the benefit of "People make mistakes" because she started the whole thing by not extending you the same courtesy, followed by reminding us of how much smarter she is.

Context isn't rocket science, people.

Exactly. The image is older and therefore has older information which is no doubt outdated by now.

And the fact that she couldn't even spell after gloating about how "smart" she is just floored me. How can you claim to be smart and have a degree and yet type that badly? Just... no.

Yes, there is no doubt that this person is a child pretending to be an adult out of college. I don't know how many times I've heard 'well, I study psychology' or 'well, I went to college' from people pretending to know what they are talking about. Would it not make sense that having a child ripped out of you would give you the same chemical imbalance that you get when you have a miscarriage? Pregnancy does a lot of things to the body, and ending it suddenly will surely do even more things to the body. You don't need a degree in anything to know that much.

I'm pro-choice, but there's no denying that abortion is extremely hard on both the body and mind. Sure, most people can take it when they are getting an abortion because they don't want to deal with it, but I can see how someone who gets an abortion because they have to would commit suicide.

Exactly. A woman's body is meant for motherhood. She has the power to create life and carry it in her. Ending it abruptly when the child is growing would no doubt put major stress on the woman. That's just common sense.

Always nice to see a pro-choice person who understands me. It's so rare. :)

Well, I hate it when someone supports one side but won't even consider the other, even going as far as disregarding fact. I support gay rights, but of course I can see how people would be uncomfortable with them having a Christian wedding and understand that. I'm pro-choice but I refuse to ignore the fact that women aren't meant to have children ripped out of their bodies. In fact, doesn't abortion do some kind of permanent damage? I don't think a high suction vacuum can be 'gentle', after all...
