The Snow Queen - My Designs

Description

Frozen sucks...

There, I said it.

You mad? If so, I suggest you pack your bags and move along because you ain't changing my mind.

I refuse to watch it, because my favorite fairytale -- The Snow Queen -- was so bastardized by Disney, I cannot even stomach it.

But before you call me a hater and get all, "YOU'RE CLOSED-MINDED!!1" on me, I'd like to point out: I've seen clips of Frozen online, and have read recaps of it on various sites to gauge the storyline. That stuff alone was enough to get me running in the other direction.

And before you get all, "BUT DISNEY CHANGES THE STORIES ALL THE TIME!!1" on me, I'd like to point out: yes, they change things, but they completely disregarded the source material here -- and that's just wrong in my opinion. Change is one thing, but completely ignoring the actual story in order to create kid schlock is just inexcusable to me. Even Tangled -- which I also didn't care for -- kept some of the original story's concepts.

I bet some of you people don't even know the story of The Snow Queen. If so, shame on you!

The Snow Queen is an amazing story written by Hans Christian Anderson -- the same guy who wrote The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, and others. His stories are enjoyable for children and adults, and several of his stories -- the ones mentioned in the last sentence -- were adapted by Disney and Don Bluth. And while some changes were made to the Disney ones -- The Little Mermaid and The Steadfast Tin Soldier segment in Fantasia 2000 -- they were generally faithful to the overall premises of their stories. Thumbelina by Don Bluth was much more faithful to its source material, and it is one of my favorites from childhood. :)

So Disney could have done this story justice. It's a great story. They even had concept art for a much more faithful adaptation. www.ambienceofmedia.com/wp-con… collider.com/wp-content/upload… img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20…

But instead of getting that, we got Frozen.

UGH! *headdesk*

Why? Gerda's an amazing heroine, and could've totally been badass in a Disney version! If they didn't want Kai and Gerda to be kids, they could've easily aged them. In fact, that would've made the relationship between Kai and the Snow Queen so amazing! A tragic and unrequited love story that could've ended with the Snow Queen releasing Kai freely to Gerda when she sees how much they love each other. It would have been so neat to see a redeemable villain (the Snow Queen is sort of a villain, after all.)

But instead Disney just said "Fuck it!" and changed everything, giving us bland heroes, a lame-ass villain, and way too many songs even for a Disney movie.

Heck, I aged them up slightly for my designs! It's not hard!

ARRGH!! Disney, why did you let me down?

So these are my designs for the classic fairytale characters -- the Snow Queen, Kai, Gerda, and the robber girl (she was one of my favorites and would've been a badass character in Disney's story too.)

And to those who like Frozen, I don't care if you like it. But please respect that I do not. Thanks.

If you'd like to see a faithful adaptation of The Snow Queen, please check out this old Soviet Union film with English captions turned on... www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8jN0o…

You know it's sad when the USSR does the story better than Disney...

I'd also like to point out that the Soviet animated version is the one that inspired Hayao Miyazaki -- yes, the Hayao Miyazaki -- to get into animation.

And if you think the whole "sister" thing was totally original, I'd just like to point out that Faerie Tale Theatre did the sister thing back in the 80s. They made the Snow Queen and the Garden Witch sisters. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBP6_l…

Could it be we're gearing up for FROZEN 2: SISTER BOOGALOO - WE TOTES ARE ORIGINAL GUISE?

I can only hope not...

And apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way. www.deafsparrow.com/2014/05/10…

And don't even get me started on Disney's Maleficent... just don't...

ENJOY!!
