Description

This is what happens when I get bored...

So, this doodle took about 2+ hours to draw, and I think it turned out okay all in all (considering this drawing idea came out of fricking nowhere.)

So, the character drawn here is Paul Berthalet, the main male lead from the 1953 movie "Lili" (and if you've seen my past fanart for this film, you probably already know that it is quite possibly my favorite old-school movie EVER!!)

Paul is a very tragic character in many ways, in spite of the movie's upbeat tones. (The book which was based on the movie "Love of Seven Dolls" is much darker)

Paul Berthalet used to be a great dancer, but when he fought in WWII his right leg was severely injured and he was crippled. Because of this, his dancing career was ruined and he had to become a puppeteer in a carnival to make money.

When he meets a young girl named Lili Daurier, he falls in love with her. But she's in love with a magician who also works at the carnival. Paul tries his best to express his feelings to her, but because of his anger and aloof nature, he can only express himself through his four puppets - Carrot Top, Reynardo, Marguerite, and Golo. Lili is so naïve and sweet, she actually thinks the puppets are real, which makes Paul use them more and more to entertain her and sing for her.

Each puppet represents a small portion of his complex character and characteristics he desires to have...

Carrot Top represents the happiness and confidence he wishes to have when talking to Lili.
Reynardo the fox represents his sneaky and cunning ways.
Marguerite represents his vanity and his selfish nature.
And Golo the giant represents his clumsy and awkward side.

Paul is shown to potentially have some form of PTSD in the film, though it's never addressed as this was before it was a widely known condition. Because of this, Paul often drinks a lot to try and forget his past and his regrets.

And that's where the title of this image (and the text on this image) come in...

I've recently fallen in love with the song "Chandelier" by Sia, and I think it really fits Paul in some aspects since it's about the singer's addiction to alcohol and all.

Someone even lowered Sia's voice to make her sound like a guy - which definitely suits Paul better - although since he voices Marguerite very well, he could probably pull off those high vocals. :B www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEuStB…

So, this drawing is supposed to show Paul drinking the night away as he usually does, and crying because he wants Lili to realize his feelings for her.

So yeah... sad times...

BUT, before you cry, I will tell you the movie is very good and is worth seeing. And it's available on DVD at long last, so yay! :la:

ENJOY!!
